It’s Not Me, It’s YOU!
It’s Not Me, It’s You…
Post-COVID teaching fitness classes, especially Yoga, felt like stepping into a strange new world. A key element of Yoga is walking the room and assisting students in their poses, but during that time, it became standard practice to maintain distance and avoid hands-on corrections.
One day, a student asked me, “When will you offer corrections again?” That question stayed with me because, truthfully, I didn’t know when or if we’d naturally move back to that style of teaching.
Fast forward to 2024, and things are finally back to ‘normal.’ I’m able to move around the room freely again, offering one-on-one instruction. It feels natural, and I can gauge the class’s pace and intensity by paying closer attention to everyone’s movements.
In my teaching, I strive for a balance of 50/50 on and off the mat. I know we all learn differently. Some people prefer to watch and follow, while others enjoy listening or benefit most from hands-on adjustments. But for me, the main reason to come off the mat is simple: it’s not about me. It’s about you.
This isn’t a Cirque du Soleil performance. My goal isn’t to ‘wow’ you with impressive poses (though I’m always humbled if you feel inspired). My focus is on delivering a class that helps you connect with yourself.
You’ll often hear me say, “Put your blinkers on.” That’s because Yoga is a time to tune out the distractions and focus inward. It’s your moment, carved out of a busy day, to honor your practice and your growth.
Yoga is as much about self-reflection as it is about movement. It’s a space to align your body, mind, and breath. So, remember it’s not about me—or even about Bendy Brian on the next mat.
It’s about you.
Enjoy your practice and embrace the joy that Yoga brings.
